Amateur Radio

Amateur radio, often called Ham radio, is a hobby enjoyed by about six million people throughout the world. An amateur radio operator, also known as a ham or radio amateur, uses advanced radio equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public service, recreation and self-training.

WinCube is using amateur radio as a foundation for our high school students and teachers to participate in the CubeSat, Balloon Cube, ARISS and the Satellite Ground Station. All of these and other activities involve the use of radio equipment utilizing official amateur radio frequencies.

Students participate in our annual amateur radio class offered in collaboration with the Winnipeg Amateur Radio Club (WARC), starting normally with the begin of the school year in September. At the end of the class our students write the official Canadian amateur radio exam and upon passing will be issued their own personal amateur radio callsign!
